Multiple Voices – understanding the needs of multiples as learners

Pat Preedy and John Mascazine have written this booklet with the support of ICOMBO to help teachers and school personnel understand the development of multiple birth children in a positive way.

It is designed to be different from other resources by presenting the perspective of parents, teachers and multiples themselves.  Many of the points are either quotes or paraphrased ideas that Pat and John have heard repeatedly during their 30 years of multiple birth research, which is published on their educational website: www.twineducation.org

Parents of multiples will be able to take the booklet into school and use it to support discussions about meeting the needs of their children. The range of aspects covered includes:

  • Understanding zygosity
  • Understanding the social and emotional development of multiples
  • School placement: Separate or together?
  • Identity
  • Comparison and competition
  • Cooperation
  • Communication
  • Friendship
  • Illness
  • Developmental differences
  • Dominance/dependence
  • Siblings
  • Benefits of being a multiple

Multiple Voices is a quick, interesting and very practical tool which teachers can use to improve the learning, social and emotional experiences of multiples as they move through education.

Proceeds from the sale of this booklet are used to fund the online course developed by John Mascazine and Pat Preedy for educational professionals who need funding.
