African Twins and Multiple Births Research Foundation (ATMBRF)
The African Twins and Multiple Births Research Foundation (ATMBRF) is a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing research, awareness, and advocacy related to twins and multiple births across Africa. The Foundation was established to address the unique biological, social, cultural, and health-related challenges associated with twin and multiple pregnancies, births, and lifelong outcomes within African populations.
Africa has some of the highest twinning rates in the world, yet twins and their families often face disproportionate risks, including higher rates of maternal and infant mortality, limited access to specialized healthcare, and persistent cultural myths and stigmatization. ATMBRF works to bridge this gap by promoting rigorous scientific research, supporting data collection, and fostering collaborations among researchers, healthcare professionals, policymakers, community stakeholders and international partners.
The Foundation’s work spans multiple disciplines, including genetics, maternal and child health, epidemiology, sociology, and public health. Through research initiatives, educational programs, and policy engagement, ATMBRF seeks to improve clinical practices, inform evidence-based interventions, and contribute to better health and social outcomes for twins, higher-order multiples, and their families.
In addition to research, ATMBRF is committed to community engagement and public education. The Foundation supports outreach programs that raise awareness, dispel harmful myths, and empower families and communities with accurate information about multiple births.
By strengthening knowledge, building capacity, and advocating for inclusive policies, the African Twins and Multiple Births Research Foundation aims to ensure that twins and multiples across Africa are recognized, supported, and given the opportunity to thrive.
